Arnaldo Carreira-Rosario
Principal Investigator Arnaldo obtained a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Biotechnology from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez and his Ph.D. in Genetics & Development from UTSouthwestern. As a post-doc, Arnaldo received training in "systems neurodevelopment" at Stanford University and the University of Oregon. There, he studied neural circuits underlying locomotion and how neural activity emerges during development.
Outside the lab, Arnaldo likes to stay active by playing soccer and biking. He also loves trying new restaurants and traveling to visit friends and family. |

Newt PenkoffLidbeck
PhD Candidate Graduate Student Newton graduated from Smith College with a B. A. in Neuroscience, and a minor in Chemistry. He completed an undergraduate thesis examining the role of Sonic Hedgehog signaling on neural crest cell migration and commissure formation during forebrain development in zebrafish. In lab, he is interested in studying the relationship between neural activity, the Golgi apparatus, and synaptogenesis during SNA. Outside of the lab, he enjoys hiking with his dog, knitting, drawing, and baking.

Shirui Zheng
Postdoctoral Researcher Shirui obtained her bachelor's degree in Biology from the East China Normal University and her Ph.D. in Zoology from the Center for Excellence in Molecular Plant Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences. As a Ph.D. student, she studied the seasonal adaptation in Lepidopteran and cilia formation in Drosophila. During her leisure time, Shirui enjoys traveling with her friends and family, playing badminton, hiking, painting, photography and playing with animals.

João Pedro Fortes Ribeiro
Undergraduate Researcher João Pedro is a sophomore at Duke University, majoring in Neuroscience with minors in Biology and Chemistry. In the lab, he is interested in investigating how neural activity takes shape during embryonic development and how specific disruptions to these early processes contribute to neurological disorders. Outside of the lab, he enjoys playing tennis, practicing acoustic guitar, and listening to Bossa Nova music.
